 Concrete Lifting

Pressure Grouting

Project

 Chesapeake City Courts Building

 Chesapeake Virginia

Job Description

The new courts building were experiencing settlement of a column footing.  Column Footing D-1 experienced ¾”+/- during construction.  The structure over the pier area is 4 stories above grade with steel columns and beams supporting concrete slabs over metal decks.

The resulting settlement most likely was due to tunnel construction.  The tunnel joins the new courts building with the existing jail and runs under Albemarle Drive.

Column D-1 is 11’6” square and 2’2” thick.  It was constructed on undisturbed soils and is 15’ below finished floor to the footing base.  The footing had been backfilled, slabs poured, and the contractor was ready to install the interior framing systems and exterior finish.

Solution

Compaction grouting to compact/consolidate sub-soils surrounding and under footing

D-1.  A total of 8 injection points were installed to a depth of 18’6” below finished floor.  A total of 56.8 Cu. Ft. of grout was injected resulting in slight lift of the structure.  As instructed by the engineers only slight lift was desired to confirm compaction.  McCallum Testing performed soil borings upon completion of the work.
